Some Thoughts on Friendship

I just got back from celebrating a friend’s 50th at Adventure World today and I’m feeling pretty blessed.  While it’s probably value, Adventure World is still pricy and not something we’d normally do.  In fact, this is the first time we’ve been.  But these friends are important to us and we see it as an investment in and expression of our friendship.  Of course, we had a great time too. What Makes You Tick?

Tim Cook, Steve Jobs, Phil Schiller

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Apple products, so I found these quotes from the two most senior executives very insightful. How would you respond if asked about what motivates and guides your life, or the ethos of you church, company, whatever?

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important thing I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life,” he said, “because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Shout Out Saturday 01.01.11

Happy New Year.

Here’s some stuff from around the web that I’ve found interesting recently.

Cosmic Fingerprints reports that the appendix may not be so vestigial after all.

Minnie Mouse gets sexed up. Ee-ew. Is it just me or has Disney really lost the plot?

Making sure we connect people with the gospel. Uses a technical internet analogy, but the idea itself is simple.

The Disturbing Legacy of Charles Finney.  I’m not well acquainted with Finney’s teachings, but this is disturbing if true.

Three ways to live.  A great little graphic.

Shout Out Saturday

I was going to call this ‘Follow Friday’, but it’s not Friday, and I don’t really follow these blogs, just some interesting articles and posts around the web you might like to read.

Small Church Tools talks about the cost of doing children’s ministry.  Kind of interesting because children’t ministry has never seemed like an option for us, just something we have to do.

This is a response to apparent discrepancies in the Bible. The more I read about and interact with neo-Atheists on the web the more I’m convinced they’re a form of fundamentalism.  Militant, loud, and simplistic. Kind of like religious anti-matter.

I love this reflection on Harry Potter and a daughter’s coming of age. More the latter than the former.

Blog Weekly Round Up 13/11/2010

It might be interesting to do an occasional weekly round up of the most popular posts on my blog. (The ‘Top Posts’ box in the column to right only counts 48 hours worth.) It’s been a relatively big week for me in terms of readership (emphasise ‘relatively’). So, in case you missed any of the fun…

  1. Being a Small Church Pastor
  2. Accordance Bible Software Team Coming to Perth
  3. Goodbye Couch! Fitness
  4. Treasure in Heaven
  5. The Bride of Christ

I also made some cosmetic changes. Basically I’ve landed back at the theme I was using previously and changed the blog name to my url, which has also changed (old one still works). I’ve had that domain for a while, may as well use it.

Thanks for reading.

Accordance Bible Software Team Coming to Perth

If you’re a Mac user then without a doubt the best Bible software currently available (and arguably the best Bible software on any platform for the past 20 years – and I’ve used a few) is Accordance by Oak Tree Software. From beginning Bible students through to scholars, it offers a strong and focused suite of Bible translations and study tools.

I was excited to discover that Accordance will be running some seminars in Australia next year, and will be in Perth for a one day seminar at Vose Seminary. This is worth a look for anyone who uses or is interested in Accordance or Bible study on a Mac.

Goodbye Couch! Fitness

For a while I’ve been looking for a fitness routine that is quick, simple and cheap (read free). I’ve tried a few iPhone apps but nothing really seemed to do the trick. So I started looking online for the old 5BX programme. Back in the 80′s my Dad came across 5BX, which was developed by the Canadian Airforce. 5BX takes you through an increasingly difficult set of graded exercises until you reach your maintenance level. The actual programme took all of 10 minutes a day, and they recommended some cardio to go with it. I dabbled with 5BX but didn’t stick to it (I was younger and a lot more active and fit). As it turns out it’s out of print and they found some of the more advanced exercises could hurt your back.

While searching I fortuitously came across a brand new (at the time still to be published) Australian designed programme based on 5BX principles, Continue reading
